Just two more days of frantic activity in the studio before my exhibition ‘Myth or Memory’ opens at Craft Central in London next week. The final run up to any exhibition is a predictable minefield; lurching between excitement and excessive confidence to debilitating doubts that none of the work is good enough to show. Today I was certainly in need of cake and a final injection of inspiration, not least because I faced the alarming prospect of gently washing (whilst holding my breath) enormous fragile glass domes laid, one by one, on a cushion of towels in the bath!
I was overtired and overwhelmed by the length of the final ‘to do’ list, but what the doctor would have prescribed (had I asked him) would have been the visit I had from my friend and photographer Giles Penfound. Giles and I have worked together often over recent years and when he photographs my work there is always creative alchemy. The images his eye creates often make me feel as though I am seeing my own work for the first time, and it is always exciting and surprising. My confidence in our collaboration means that my work often doesn’t feel truly complete until Giles has captured it. New ideas of working together come bubbling to mind over coffee and chelsea buns but is he really ready for my summer plans to start stitching into his photographs…..
So…before the new pieces are packed and on their way to London here are some of his wonderful images from today; these are some of my larger pieces and just a taste of the exhibition.
By Monday morning there will be no more time left for burning the midnight oil…all will have to be transported, installed, dusted, labelled and priced by then!
The exhibition also includes smaller dome pieces, glass caskets and box frames with stitches, wire, wax and porcelain; a large ‘seed’ folding screen, a scattering of over sized tassels and a few pieces that appear to be from the collection of the 19th century traveller and collector, Terrigan Marchlever.
If you are in London next week please do come and see the show, I shall be there in the The Showcase gallery all week and look forward to chatting to visitors!
